Brown University’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology seeks an archaeologist with Arctic training and collection management skills to serve as Project Manager for the last year of a US National Park Service-funded project inventorying and rehousing collections from important Alaskan archaeological sites at Cape Krusenstern, Onion Portage, and along the Kobuk and Noatak Rivers. This is an opportunity to work with some of the key archaeological collections upon which Western Arctic prehistory was developed, to use and build skills in museum-based collections management, and to participate in on-going efforts to increase accessibility to, and enhance use of, this vital legacy collection.

The position is a Grade 9, full-time, one-year staff position with full benefits at Brown University. It is based in the Laboratory for Circumpolar Studies at the Haffenreffer Museum’s Collections Research Center in Bristol, RI.

Candidates must have a BA or higher degree in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, or a related field, and should have professional knowledge of cultural resources, principles, and concepts as would be acquired by possession of at least one full year of graduate-level education in archaeology or 2-3 years of documented work in collections management for an institution with comparable archaeological collections. Candidates must also have a working knowledge of database management sufficient to extract data from, and enter data to, an integrated relational database with multiple fields, tables, and data types as well as a basic skills (or better) in digital photography and metadata capture. Candidates must also possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Preferred candidates will have clearly demonstrated experience and documented understanding of western Arctic archaeology and material culture and will have a demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with federal and university administrators.
